ABOUT THE PROJECT

The A2 motorway, also known as the Highway of Freedom, is one of Poland's key transport routes.

It runs through the central part of the country, linking the western and eastern borders. As part of two separate investments, BIOT, in cooperation with LUG Light Factory, delivered modern LED lighting and the intelligent Urban control system at all motorway interchanges. The modernization covered 260 kilometers of the route from the western border, significantly improving energy efficiency and lighting quality.

Challenge

Managing thousands of points in real time

The BIOT URBAN system deepened the savings after the lighting upgrade on the Świecko-Konin section of the A2 motorway, generating an additional 15% energy savings.

Within the LUG Group, where LUG Light Factory supplied energy-efficient luminaires and ESCOlight handled financing and execution, BIOT delivered the "brain" of the operation: an advanced dynamic lighting control system. Replacing sodium luminaires with LED guaranteed a significant efficiency improvement, but the real challenge was intelligent management of the new infrastructure to maximize savings and adapt lighting to actual needs. A key requirement was integrating the control system with a real-time road traffic intensity measurement system.

The project included:

  • 4,218 individually addressed luminaires.

  • 255 km of motorway.

  • 63 electrical cabinets controlling the lighting.

  • 49 motorway infrastructure sites.

  • 12 interchanges.

Solution

Optimizing energy consumption

As BIOT, we delivered our proprietary, dynamic URBAN control system. It enabled full integration and execution of advanced lighting scenarios.

The core function of our solution is dynamic management of light intensity based on current traffic. During periods of lower traffic volume, the system automatically reduces luminaire power while maintaining full safety standards and delivering additional, significant savings.

Our system connected 63 control cabinets and thousands of luminaires into a single, coherent organism capable of immediate response to changing conditions on the highway.

  • Yellow - energy use before modernization.

  • Purple - after modernization with the system, manual control.

  • Light violet - full automation based on traffic intensity.

The A2 motorway modernization is a flagship example of how modern LED luminaires create a strong foundation, while BIOT's intelligent control system is the key to unlocking the full savings potential and building truly dynamic, adaptive road infrastructure.

Result

An additional 15% savings thanks to intelligent control

The project's results exceeded expectations. Total electricity consumption and related costs were reduced by as much as 80%.

This spectacular result was possible thanks to the synergy of two technologies:

  • 65% savings came from replacing luminaires with energy-efficient LED.

  • An additional 15% reduction in energy use was generated directly by intelligent light intensity management with our URBAN control system.

Thanks to BIOT's solution, the total carbon footprint reduction reached 80%, which translates to cutting CO2 emissions by 2,905 tons per year.

This was a very complex project. (...) We achieved major energy savings and designed a proprietary, dynamic control system, delivering a new quality of lighting system. (...). For me, this project was a great challenge where I could use my many years of experience.
